Rapier Loom

Double rapier looms: In these machines, two rapiers are used. The filling yarn is pulled from an accumulator on one side of the weaving machine by one rapier, called the giver, and then passed to another rapier, called the taker, in the machine's center. The taker pulls back and crosses over the filling yarn.

An alternative to the traditional shuttle loom is the projectile loom. Fabric manufacturers make extensive use of it. A little metal device like a bullet is used to fill yarn in this projectile loom. The object has a clamp for grasping the yarn at one end and is then driven into and through the shed. When weaving with finer yarns like silk, wool, linen, chenille, etc., Rapier looms are preferable. Most commonly, they are employed with dobby to create weave patterns with a maximum of 20 held frames. Depending on the width, the loom can go as fast as 600-650 RPM.

Large working widths of up to 5 m are achieved by withdrawing a flexible rapier band outside of the shed and winding it on wheels or placing it in a semi-circular channel. It's next to impossible to weave with fancy yarns in the warp direction. The rapier housing may consume as much room as the entire machine itself. Looms with bendable rapiers have been developed to address this issue. However, if the rapier is too rigid, it won't coil, and if it's too pliable, it'll buckle. Weft yarn usage can reach up to 1300 meters per minute in rigid and flexible rapier machines, which work at speeds of roughly 200 to 260 ppm.
