Q. What causes transformers to hum?
Answer
The continual expansion and contraction of the steel core inside the transformer causes transformer hum or transformer noise. The quantity of flux determines core expansion which is determined by the applied voltage and the number of turns in the transformer coils. The magnetic flux travelling through the transformer core is constantly changing causing the core to grow and shrink.
