The most effective of the two types of cooling tower is the counterflow (induced draft) kind. Towers with a crossflow (forced draft) disperse hot water parallel to the wind, whereas towers with a counterflow inject hot water straight into the airflow. Density variations between the outside air and the air inside the tower cause air to flow. As warm, humid air is denser than cold air, it will climb through tower, whereas the dry, cool air from the outside will sink.
