What Imatinib Mesylate Is Used For:
a cNewly diagnosed adult and pediatric patients with Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CML) in chronic phase.
a cPh+ CML in blast crisis, accelerated phase, or chronic phase after failure of interferon-alpha therapy.
a cAdult patients with relapsed or refractory Philadelphia chromosome + acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ ALL).
a cAdult patients with myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative diseases (MDS/MPD) associated with PDGFR gene rearrangements.
a cGastrointestinal stromal tumors that are C-kit positive.
Note: If a drug has been approved for one use, physicians may elect to use this same drug for other problems if they believe it may be helpful.
How Imatinib Mesylate Is Given:
a cImatinib mesylate is a pill, taken by mouth, once or twice daily.
a cImatinib mesylate should be taken with a large glass of water, after a meal.
a cThe amount of Imatinib mesylate that you will receive depends on many factors, including your general health or other health problems, and the type of cancer or condition being treated. Your doctor will determine your dose and schedule.
Side Effects:
Important things to remember about the side effects of Imatinib mesylate:
a cMost people do not experience all of the side effects listed.
a cSide effects are often predictable in terms of their onset and duration.
a cSide effects are almost always reversible and will go away after treatment is complete.
a cThere are many options to help minimize or prevent side effects.
a cThere is no relationship between the presence or severity of side effects and the effectiveness of the medication.
a cThe side effects of Imatinib mesylate and their severity depend on how much of the drug is given. In other words, high doses may produce more severe side effects.
The following side effects are common (occurring in greater than 30%) for patients taking Imatinib mesylate:
a cLow blood counts. Your white and red blood cells and platelets may temporarily decrease. This can put you at increased risk for infection, anemia and/or bleeding.
a cNausea and vomiting
a cEdema (swelling of the face, feet, hands)
a cMuscle cramps and bone pain
a cDiarrhea
a cHemorrhage (see bleeding problems)
a cSkin rash (see skin reactions)
a cFever
These side effects are less common side effects (occurring in about 10-29%) of patients receiving Imatinib mesylate:
a cHeadache
a cFatigue
a cJoint pain
a cIndigestion (see heartburn)
a cAbdominal pain
a cCough
a cShortness of breath
a cPoor appetite
a cConstipation
a cNight sweats (see skin reactions)
a cNose bleeds (see bleeding problems)
a cWeakness
a cYour fertility, meaning your ability to conceive or father a child, may be affected by Imatinib mesylate. Please discuss this issue with your health care provider.
A rare, but potentially serious side effect of Imatinib mesylate is liver toxicity. There may be elevations in transaminase, bilirubin, and lactate dehydrogenase.
Not all side effects are listed above. Some that are rare (occurring in less than 10% of patients) are not listed here. However, you should always inform your health care provider if you experience any unusual symptoms.
When to contact your doctor or health care provider:
Contact your health care provider immediately, day or night, if you should experience any of the following symptoms:
a cFever of 100.4A F (38A C) or higher, chills (possible signs of infection)
a cShortness of breath, difficulty breathing
a cSignificant bleeding from nose, mouth, rectum that will does not stop within 15 minutes.
The following symptoms require medical attention, but are not an emergency. Contact your health care provider within 24 hours of noticing any of the following:
