Cupping therapy (Hijama) is a traditional therapy with history over two thousand years in China and still popular nowadays because of its efficiency. It is an ancient Chinese form of alternative medicine in which a local suction is created on the skin. Practitioners believe this mobilizes blood flow in order to promote healing. Suction is created by heat (fire) or mechanical devices (hand or vacuum gun).

Through either heat or suction, the skin is gently drawn upwards by creating a vacuum in a cup over the target area of the skin. The cups stay for 20 to 30 minutes. It is believed that it can relieve pain, deep scar tissues in the muscles and connective tissue, muscle knots, and swelling.

Normally, cupping cups were made of horns, bamboos, pottery, glass and plastic material, etc. Because of the hardness or fragility of these materials, it is difficult to apply on some area (like knees) or scratch occurs during cupping.
