Key Features

According to the black body radiation law, all bodies emit radiations in the infrared range of the electro magnetic spectrum (roughly from 900 - 14000 nanometers). The higher the temperature of the body the more the radiation emitted. Thermal imaging cameras detect this radiation and produce an image called the thermo grams. A relatively new tool for identifying potential problems in electrical panels and switchgears resulting in electrical hazards is based on the use of these thermo grams. This hot spot detection tool if used effectively can identify potential problem areas in advance without initiating a shutdown. The concept is based on the principle that generally electrical failures are preceded by abnormal heat build up. Thermo grams can be used for diagnostic and preventive inspection of the electrical equipment.

Hot spots can form due to various reasons:

Use of improper lugs / incomplete crimp.

Poor Contact.

Bolts carrying current.

Dirty contact surface.

Cut wire strands to accommodate smaller lugs

An abnormally high temperature for instance could indicate

High contact resistance.

Loose connections.

Conductor Overloading.

If any one of the conductors in a parallel run of multiple conductors is hot it would indicate unequal loading of that conductor.

In HT Transformers it could indicate inefficient cooling by transformer oil / low quantity of oil.
