Sulfosulfuron is used as an active ingredient in plant protection products. It is used as a post-emergence herbicide to control Trespen species and the Quecke as well as certain broad-leaved grass in winter wheat and triticale. The effect is due to the inhibition of acetolactate synthase (ALS), an enzyme involved in the synthesis of the amino acids isoleucine, valine and leucine in susceptible plants
