The standard solar photovoltaic street lighting system comprises of a Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) or LED lamps as light source with inbuilt charge controller, re-chargeable lead acid battery for storage, PV modules for charging the battery, suitable electronics and mechanical hardware for fixing the sub systems.

The solar street light is available either with preset timer or a automatic dusk to dawn operation.
