Physical and chemical properties: fine white to light gray crystals, dispersed in oil at a ratio of 60 % - 65 %, begin to decompose at 800 a , and are flammable and humid.
Use: sodium hydride is most commonly used for deprotonation of 1,3 - dicarbonyl compounds, maleates and similar compounds, and the corresponding sodium compounds can be alkylated to produce a wide variety of organic compounds. For the corresponding reactions, see dieckmann condensation reaction, stobe condensation reaction, darzens condensation reaction and claisen condensation reaction. It has also been used to synthesize thiophyllides, thereby effecting the conversion from ketones to epoxy compounds.
