Key Features
SMS is a trilaminate nonwoven: 1 layer of meltblown nonwoven is in a
sandwich between 2 layers of spunbond. The meltblown has a very high
density web of fine fibers and is suitable for applications requiring
filtration (of particulates, bacteria, fluids). The 2 layers of
spunbond are added to provide the necessary strength resistance. The
SMS is widely used for surgical gowns and all clothing requiring a high
isolation.
Thea-Tex is introducing single layer high performance
SMS masks in order to offer higher filtration masks in the same price
range as 2-ply masks. Comparative testing in US labs has proved that a
1-ply SMS mask can obtain a BFE level of 90%, whereas a 2-ply mask can
achieve only about 60%.
In future Thea-Tex believes high
performance SMS masks may meet all the performance requirements of
international standards through a single layer mask, combining BFE,
breathability and fluid repellency.
The SMS is sourced exclusively from Ahlstrom and manufactured using the latest German Recofil technology.
