2. Single row taper roller bearings can carry axial loads in one direction only. A radial load imposed on the bearing gives rise to an induced axial load which must be counteracted and the bearing is therefore generally adjusted against a second bearing. Some single row taper roller bearings are also available as matched pairs in a face-to-face arrangement. These are specially manufactured so that when mounted immediately adjacent to each other, the predetermined axial internal clearance will be obtained and an even distribution of radial load achieved. Paired bearing arrangements are used where the load carrying capacity of a single bearing is inadequate, or the bearing arrangement must carry axial loads in both directions under given conditions of axial play.
