Silk Yarn - Hand-spun From Scrap Silk, Unique Hanks With Natural Flecks

The yarn is made from scrap silk, and other fibres, produced as a bi-product of sari manufacture and other silk production in southern India. Women's co-operatives hand spin these silk remnants by drop spindle, chakra, or wheel.. Spinning and knitting the yarn enables the women to earn a much needed income from their cottage industry.

The yarn is hand spun into gleaming hanks ready for export or use in local garment manufacturing. Because it is hand spun each hank is unique; varying in thickness and often containing some yarn, which is slightly over spun. The spinning is sometimes an outdoor village occupation; so there may be the odd bit of leaf or straw caught up in the yarn, simply remove this matter when knitting the yarn. The yarn washes easily by hand.
