If a source of brackish water is available, this may be used as the feed source for the RO Plant. This will result in very substantial capital cost and operating cost savings compared to seawater RO Plant. The key to using brackish water, however, is that the TDS of the water source should remain relatively constant over time.
In some cases the pumping of the brackish water causes lowering of the groundwater table, with the result that sea water intrusion may occur and an increase of the TDS of the water source over time. An RO Plant designed to treat brackish water will either work inefficiently or stop working as the TDS increases. In addition, when there is seawater intrusion, the original groundwater source may be ruined, and it will take years for it to regenerate.
Seawater Source. The development of a good seawater source for the RO Plant is perhaps the single most important factor in ensuring the success of the RO system. There are three main types of seawater sources, and many variations. The best one will depend on the local site and ocean conditions, and the local geology.
