Product Description

Conventionally, particle size distribution analysis is carried out using pipette and hydrometer methods. In the hydrometer method, it is possible to determine particle sizes in the range of 75 microns, but the method involves computation and is time-consuming.

The pipette method can be used for determining only the percentage of specific particle sizes less than 0.02 mm, 0.006 mm, and 0.002 mm as a percentage of the total soil sample.

The Plummet Balance Method is a rapid method used to determine sub-sieve particle size distribution for the entire range. It requires only adjustment of the height of the balance so that the plummet sinks to the required depth. The percentage of soil in suspension is directly indicated by a pointer over a graduated scale.

A vertical rod is mounted on a sturdy base with leveling screws. A pointer with steel pivots turns in jewel bearings and moves over a graduated scale. On the opposite end of the pointer, a plummet is suspended. A rack and pinion arrangement is provided on the vertical rod for height adjustment.

The apparatus is supplied with a chart showing the relationship between K and suspension temperature for soils of varying specific gravity from 2.4 to 2.8, which helps in solving Stokesa equation.
