Technical Information of Perlite Usage in Foundry Industry

Perlite is a Slag-Holding compound is added as a slag coagulant in continues induction furnace and in molten metal pouring ladles, prior to pouring in the mould. It may be added either to the surface of the bath after the ladles is filled or to the bottom of the ladle after a heel of molten metal has been poured. In application, Perlite has got tendency to exfoliate on the temperature above 800 ^oC, so it will expand when it comes into contact with melt, forming a lightweight, viscous cellular accumulation. This accumulation of Perlite attracts all individual slag particles in the metal, cleans the metal by coagulating impurities, floating them up to the slag layer and also re-entry of the impurities into the metal. Perlite also helps in reducing Sulphur and Phosphorus compounds in the melt.

Perlite Ore mixed with Raw Vermiculite can be a superior ladle topping agent Since, exfoliation of Vermiculite is an endothermic reaction, so it helps to maintain the high temperature in ladle, also removes non-metallic inclusions in excess.
