Lactobacillus sporogenes
belongs to the group of lactic acid bacilli that are characterized by
their ability to produce lactic acid from fermentable sugars. The
Lactic acid bacteria are the most predominant clinically used bacterial
species as a Probiotic.


It is a gram positive, aerobic and
facultative anaerobic organism with terminal spores. It is a organism
of choice over other lactobacilli in having many advantages



The spores are viable for a long time and propagate well in the
intestine, surviving gastric acidity and bile juice. Probiotic
microbial culture must reach the intestinal tract in a viable state and
in sufficient numbers.


Bacillus coagulans (Lactobacillus sporogenes),
manufactured by Uni-Sankyo Ltd, is a lactic acid producing and spore
forming bacteria. It has all the characteristics of resistance to high
temperatures and acid. It grows well, colonizes in intestine and
produces L(+) lactic acid, which has got better metabolic rate compared
to DL or D(-) type of lactic acid produced by most of the traditional
probiotics. Spores are capable of germination and development into
living microorganisms. They also produce antibacterial substances
called bacteriocin. Their use in humans for various gastrointestinal
problems like diarrhea, IBS etc., and other diseases as well as in aqua
and vet, have been well documented.


When they are
administered to animals through feed or water, they can transform into
active bacterial cells in existing specific environmental conditions
such as body temperature, acidity, bile and other secretions of the
upper digestive tract. This is the ideal and desirable character of Lactobacillus sporogenes
as probiotics i.e., transforming from spores to vegetative forms.
Thereafter, reproduction and cell growth continue throughout the
intestinal tract and are eventually passed in animal waste. Thus,
spores are superior microbial cultures, because they can withstand
adverse conditions.
