Iodine number is a very
important characteristic of oil. It can be used for differentiating
the different grades of oil and can also be used to infer
adulteration or identifying the oil, based on its iodine number.

The present method of
determining the iodine value using wet chemical analysis is very
cumbersome and time consuming.

United Phosphorus Limited
has now come up with an electronic iodine value meter, designed and
developed in collaboration with Central Scientific Instruments
Organisation, Chandigarh. The basic measurement principle is based on
the measurement of the change in potential between the sensing and
reference electrodes when the electrodes are immersed in a mixture of
test reagent and the sample oil. It is a low cost, battery operated,
portable instrument which displays the iodine number directly on its
LCD display.
