Milk of Magnesia acts as a laxative in the colon. The majority of the suspension is not absorbed in the intestinal tract and will create an osmotic effect to draw water into the gut from surrounding tissues. With this increase of water in the intestines, the feces will soften and the intraluminal volume of the feces will increase. These effects still stimulate intestinal motility and induce the urge to defecate. Magnesium hydroxide (Milk of Magnesia) will also release cholecystokinin (CKK) in the intestines which will accumulate water and electrolytes in the lumen and furthermore increase intestinal motility. Liquid Paraffina .MOA It is trivalent alcohol that increases the stimulation to defecate. An osmotic effect leads to the secretion of water into the intestinal lumen resulting in a softening of the stool.A Sodium Picosulfatea .MOA Sodium picosulfate is aA prodrug. This compound is aA stimulant laxative and increasesA peristalsisA in the gut. Sodium picosulfate is typically prescribed in a combined formulation withA magnesium citrate, anA osmotic laxative. This combination is a highly effective laxative, often prescribed to patients for bowel cleansing prior toA colonoscopies.
