Hydrochloric Acid

Hydrochloric Acid is compound of Hydrogen and Chlorine. It is widely used chemical due to its highly active nature. Commercial quality material is generally 30 percent to 33 percent, which is the maximum concentration available of Hydrochloric acid with water. It is light yellow in color with pungent odor. It is highly corrosive in nature affecting almost all metals. Graphite, Rubber lined and Plastic materials are suitable to use. Contact with skin avoided. Safety precautions are recommended for handling this material. It is normally not manufactured directly but major quantity is produced as a by-product in Chlorine and Chlorination plants. It is not flammable or explosive and quite safe to handle with proper handling care.

Uses

Hydrochloric Acid is extensively used as a major raw material to produce number of metallic salts. In organic synthesis of Dyestuff Intermediaries, it also finds major consumption as important raw material. Purified Hydrochloric acid is largely consumed by pharmaceutical product manufacturers. Reasonably good quantities are required by fertilizer and insecticide industries. It is used in galvanizing of steel plants and other metal treatment industries. Hydrochloric acid is also extensively used in oil well drilling. Hence it is used by almost all sectors of industries as major raw material.

Besides chemical use, it finds application as household cleaning material. Diluted acid is used for cleaning floors, ceramic products, tiles and bathrooms.
