Pharmaceutical intermediates, mainly used to produce anthelmintic drugs piperazine phosphate, piperazine citrate, as well as fluphenazine, codondine, and rifampicin. Piperazine hexahydrate is dissolved in ethanol, added with glacial acetic acid, stirred and cooled to precipitate piperazine acetate, which is used to synthesize the hormone drug prednisone sodium phosphate. Piperazine hexahydrate reacts with acetic anhydride to prepare acetpiperazine, an intermediate of the anthelmintic pipenithiazole.

Description: An anti-nematodal agent effective against the intestinal nematodes ASCARIS LUMBRICOIDES (roundworm) and ENTEROBIUS VERMICULARIS (pinworm, threadworm). It produces a neuromuscular block leading to flaccid muscle paralysis in susceptible worms, which are then dislodged from the gut and expelled in feces.
