In 1976 and 1977, solid phase a sandwicha enzyme immunoassays were developed in which HBsAg was captured on a solid phase coated with polyclonal antibodies against HBsAg (anti-HBs) and then detected with anti-HBs conjugated to an enzyme. In recent years, monoclonal anti-HBs assays have been developed for the detection of HBsAg.
