Water in Diesel Fuel
Diesel can absorb water in solution in varying proportions depending upon temperature e.g. 50 -200 ppm by weight at 25-60 Degree centigrade.
EN 590 permits a maximum water content of 200 mg/kg. In many countries, however, analysis of diesel fuels reveals higher water concentrations. Dissolved water does not harm the fuel-injection system. Free water, however, can cause damage to fuel lubricated injection pumps within a very short space of time and even when it is present only in very small quantities.
The presence of water in the fuel tank as a result of condensation from the air cannot be prevented. A water separator and a water sensor on the fuel filter are therefore absolutely essential.
