Biological growth on the media surface of trickling filters converts dissolved organic waste material into byproducts like Carbon-dioxide, Nitrates, Nitrites, Water and Biological solids which are later removed by clarification.

Old effluent treatment plants generally used rock as the surface to induce such biological attached growth, but this system came with many disadvantages like heavy weight, elaborate support and other civil structure, poor wetting characteristics etc.
