Emodin Anthraquinones represent a large family of compounds having diverse biological properties. Emodin (1,3,8-trihydroxy-6-methylanthraquinone) is a naturally occurring anthraquinone present in the roots and barks of numerous plants, molds, and lichens, and an active ingredient of various Chinese herbs.
Pharmacology
Emodin is being studied as a potential agent that could reduce the impact of type 2 diabetes. It is a potent selective inhibitor of the enzyme 11I -HSD1. In studies in obese mice, emodin limits the effect of glucocorticoids and may therefore ameliorate diabetes and insulin resistance.
Main Functions
