Substation plays a very important role in Electrical Transmission and Distribution networks. It has basically four roles -

1) To step up generated voltage at the Power generating plants to Transmission level voltage,
2) to act as Switching station,
3) to act as interconnecting between two Transmission level voltages through Interconnecting Transformers,
4) to step down the transmission level voltage to distribution level voltage.

Substations can be of following types :

1) Outdoor Air insulated type.
2) Indoor Air insulated type.
3) Indoor Gas insulated type.
4) Outdoor Gas insulated hybrid type.
