Cyclopentolate Hydrochloride

Cyclopentolate Hydrochloride has an anticholinergic activity. Its chemical name is 2-(Dimethylamino)ethyl 1-hydroxy-I -phenylcyclopentaneacetate hydrochloride. The anticholinergic properties of Cyclopentolate Hydrochloride blocks the responses of the sphincter muscles of the iris and the accommodative muscles of the ciliary body to cholinergic stimulation, producing pupillary dilation and paralysis of accommodation . Cyclopentolate Hydrochloride acts rapidly, but has a shorter duration than atropine. Maximal cycloplegia usually occurs within 25 to 75 minutes after instillation. Complete recovery of accommodation takes 6 to 24 hours. Complete recovery from mydriasis in a few individuals may require several days. Very heavily pigmented irides may require more doses of Cyclopentolate Hydrochloride than lightly pigmented irides. Cyclopentolate Hydrochloride is contraindicated when there is untreated narrow-angle glaucoma, or untreated anatomically narrow angles are present, or if the patient is hypersensitive to the drug.
