Features of Earthworms (Eisenia Fetida):
Eisenia Foetida or Red Worms are the best known and most widely used composting worm. They are excellent for composting. In terms of versatility, no other species can come close to the overall vermicomposting abilities of this worm.
The Eisenia Foetida is an epigeic worm. Epigeic worms live on the surface of the soil or in the top 10 inches or so of the topsoil under the litter layer. Red Worms can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, can process organic waste materials very quickly, and will increase in numbers at a rapid rate if their primary requirements are met.
This is definitely a species better known for composting applications than as a bait worm, given its smaller size, but they can certainly be used successfully as live food for fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds. They are very easy to raise and offer a great source of protein, along with other valuable nutrients. The worm is generally 35-130 mm in length. The optimum temperature for Eisenia Foetida is 68 to 77 degrees F [20-25 degrees C. They can tolerate temperatures from 40 -80 degrees F[4 -27 degrees C.]
