Indication


Malaria: Treatment
of malaria: Bedilar is indicated for the treatment of malaria,
particularly when caused by strains o f Plasmodium falciparum
resistant to chloroquine. Prophylaxis of malaria: Bedilar is not
recommended generally for malaria prophylaxis. Prophylaxis with
Bedilar should only be considered for areas where P.falciparum
malaria is endemic, the causative agents are sensitive to Bedilar and
alternative drugs are either not available or contra-indications.



Emergency
self-treatment of malaria; Bedilar may be prescribed as a stand-by
treatment for emergencies in which malaria is suspected and
immediate medical assistance is not available.



Opportunistic
injections: Infections with Toxoplasma gondil. Prophylaxis of
Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.



Official
recommendations on the appropriate use of antibiotics should be
followed, especially usage recommendations to prevent the increase in
antibiotic resistance.

Curative treatment of complicated
malaria


The standard
treatment of severe malaria is administration for 7-10 days.
Treatment with quitine can be shortened to 2-3 days . If quinine
therapy is followed by a single dose of Bediler. Sequential therapy
also effectively prevents the common with quine mono therapy.



Malaria
Prophylaxis


The malaria risk
must be carefully weighed against the risk of serious adverse drug
reactions. Bedilar is prescribed for malaria prophylaxis, the
physician must check without fail whether the patient is intolerant
of sulfonarides and should inform the patient about the associated
risk. The product must be immediately withdrawn if skin reactions
occur

For malaria
prophylaxis Bedilar is first administered one week before arrival in
the endemic area. The medication should then be continued according
to the above schedule during the stay and for a further four weeks
after return. Prophylaxis should not be confirmed for more than two
years since no experience is available on more prolonged
administration
