Foremost stage of water intake system is filtration which is done by bar screens or trash racks. This helps in the removal of bulky and coarse material. The quality of filtered water required is required for the spacing of bars in bar screens. Bar screens are used in two stages to prevent material coarse from reaching the traveling band screens. In first stage broad spacing bar removes bulky solids and in second stage bar screen with smaller bar spacing is used to eliminate coarse debris that can clog travelling band screens which are installed downstream for finer screening.
