In this type of bank, the total kva is divided into a number of steps equal or unequal- depending upon the load conditions. The capacitor steps are switched in or out through a contractor, controlled by a power factor controller of type MCX. If a discharge coil (Voltage Transformer) is connected along with the steps, the discharge time of capacitors gets reduced to 10 seconds (otherwise it is 10 minutes).
