Product Overview
Key Features
At a simplistic level, transformers with high PD activity can be classified as having a greater risk of failure than transformers in which no PD activity can be detected. Once PD activity has been identified, the defects which are causing the PD then need to be located and an action plan drawn up for serviceability and reliability of supply system (repair, replace, PD monitoring etc.)
The internal discharge will produce sounds waves which are in few hundreds of KHz frequency range. Special sensors of 10-500 KHz critical frequency is used to have optimized sensitivity of measurement. Intensity of Partial Discharge magnitude is identified and is analysed in to characterize the nature of discharge (defect) in the insulation system.
For this purpose four sensors are used to detect and locate the PD activity within the transformer body. The sensors are attached to the transformer tank wall. The Principle of technique is to measure the time of the acoustic hits and compare it with the measurement of other channels. The sensor closest to the PD source will acquire the PD signal in least time when compared to other sensors.
Acoustic Emission measurement is a very powerful method for examining the behavior of materials.
