Instead when heated kaolin undergoes a series of transformations:Dehydration (400aEUR"650AdegC):Kaolin loses its water of hydration and transforms into metakaolin (AlaSiaOa++).Formation of Mullite (1050aEUR"1250AdegC):At higher temperatures metakaolin crystallizes into mullite (3AlaOafA*2SiOa) a stable mineral phase.Instead of melting kaolin undergoes these phase changes where it transitions from its hydrated form to a more stable ceramic-like structure. Decomposition begins around 1000AdegC.
