The centrifugal pump-impeller is driven by an electric motor and the pressure developed varies with the speed of the motor. Thus the pressure (thrust) can be varied by varying the motor speed. The practical limitation is that a low motor speed causes reduced oil flow and increased operating time. It is therefore recommended that variable pressure thrust be used in the stalled position of the Thruster, when the maximum possible thrust would be obtained. Thruster motors are of totally enclosed design, and stators are generally wound with class 'B' insulation. They are designed for satisfactory operation at rated voltage of 400/440 volts, 3 phase, 50 cycles.
