TOPIC : How do you identify a geniune supplier?
Posted on 26 June 2009 at 15:51:00

Is there a way to find out if there is a genuine supplier in India. I own a small business importing items from India and selling in a foreign market. Recently I ordered from a company who had a great website and 20 years of trade. I paid for goods in Feb and till date have not received my goods. Talking to the owner is not helping. What can I do to get answers? Any overseas buyer please advise if anyone is in a similar position.

Dear ms Pratima:. At the first place you should have dealt with the party on conditional LC. such hat party receives payment only after your approval through the bank. Now that you have already done a mistake of paying the party in advance, you will have to run after the supplier. as you say that there is no response from the owner also, do contact commercial cell of Indian embassy with the relevant documents and lodge a complaint through them. It is likely that party will contact you for the settlement. If not, party can loss the credibility and be banned from exporter's list(blacklisted). However, loopholes are also there for them. next step is to make the name of the firm and the owner public in this portal.

When you are heeding to this, make sure that you deny accepting any goods. Just ask for the original payment along with the interest and expenses incurred. that is all. if you settle for supplies, it is likely that you will be supplied with inferior stuff or goods not supplied at all. If you are still keen to get the supplies, please get the same inspected through some reliable source. once checking is over, do take possession of the goods in your control and get the same exported out. supplier can be made to pay for that.

Wish you good luck.

Being the part of Indian Industry I do agree that these kind of situation arises sometime.
I would suggest you to nominate you agent to look after your trade in your behalf.
1. You can identify a reliable supplier
2. You can get quality product.
3. Timely delivery
4. Regular Update

This is one of the solution I have advised.
Hope it will help you.

How do you go about doing that? I have filed complaints via India trade mission and also via Consumercompliants.in but no one has taken any action.

My Australian company is also interested in how to conduct business from Australia with an Indian business and how to identify business frauds. Any tips would be appreciated also.
