An exhibition of traditional handicrafts and handloom of the North-east organised by the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Ltd. got underway Delhi Haat in the capital on February 13.

The secretary, Ministry of Development of North-east Region, Mrs. Veena Sreeram Rao inaugurated the exhibition that will be open to the visitors till February 25.

The exhibition features Bamboo crafts, handlooms weaving, wood carving, embroidery, jewellery, equipments made of serpentinate stone, baskets, handmade flowers made of palm leaves, shola wood, coral leaves, hollbell and a host of others.

Award winning artisans from the eight sister states Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim are participating in the exhibition.

Inaugurating the exhibition Mrs Veena said, "Such exhibitions are organised to bring to light the rare talent of people from the North-east. It is the actual place where these small entrepreneurs get the opportunity to showcase and market their products. Over 71 craftsmen and weavers are
participating in the exhibition."

"Here many are award winners as well. Despite having received accolades, their skills have not been able to reach the mass. I think this is the place where their products can be actually adored which in turn would give them hope to participate in near future. The exhibition is also a good
platform for them to get in touch with prospective buyers," she added.

After being awarded the UNESCO Seal of Excellence certificate, Tridib Mahanta from Assam is displaying his fine quality bamboo cutlery which also happens to be eco-friendly — completely washable and reusable. He claims that his cutlery can last up to 20 years even after regular use
and believes that in the days ahead his cutlery could replace the royal silver spoon.

There was a sea of beautiful items at the fair and wherever one glanced, the only thing that met one's eyes, besides the huge turnout of the people, were the wares of artisans. These handmade items have a charm of their own and it exerts a kind of a magnetic pull that enraptures one and all.

Shimray from Manipur is showcasing his collection of household items made up by serpentinate stone which is considered to be a conductor of heat.

"These items are purely handmade, without any use of machines. I am very happy that people are admiring my products and buying them as well. This is the first time I have participated and I am getting such an overwhelming response from the people. It makes you feel proud to have been doing something that is being appreciated by so many people," he said.

Other than this Seira, from Nagaland, has displayed handmade flowers made of palm leaves, shola wood, coral leaves, hollbell flower and many such natural flowers. These flowers look no less real to an untrained eye.

Gragj, a US visitor feels that goods here are incomparable to any other product. All items here are exclusively hand-crafted by a bevy of extremely talented people. Their efforts are indeed worth appreciating.

"There antique looks appeal to me the most," revealed Gragj.

Mr. Chankum, Managing Director, North East Handloom and Handicraft Corporation Ltd.(NEHHC) said, "The products of the north-east are far more superior to the products made in the south or anywhere else. Their skills are incomparable. A Manipuri fabric made 30 years back is still as bright as
it was at that time. So, it's all about the quality of the product. Their weaving, production and dyeing is excellent. From that viewpoint, they are unmatched."

Mr. Dhiraj Thakuria, Manager, NEHHC added, "In every product you will find the hard work of the artisans. A stall of a trader from Assam has displayed handmade Taj Mahals, Dinosaurs and other showpiece items made of Bamboo and Black natural rice. A single decorative piece takes nearly two months to complete. It is made only out of natural products which in effect manifests the
creativity of these god-gifted artisans."

It was just the first day and the exhibitors have started getting good response from not just visitors, but also from prospective buyers. The Expo is an effort to provide an exposure to the artisans to a wider canvas of market forces and clientele to give boost to the segment.
