The demand for coal in the country will rise significantly over the next two decades and there is need to increase underground coal production, said Mr Dasari Narayana Rao, Union Minister of State for Coal.
Speaking at the Parliamentary Consultative Committee meeting on 'Underground Coal Mining: Challenges and Opportunities' in Hyderabad, Mr Rao said the demand for coal would touch 2,000 million tonnes by 2031-32 from 463.5 million tonnes in 2006-07.
"Underground coal production emerges as an opportunity in the context of growing demand for coal," he said.
