TOPIC : Classification of Containers by size

A general purpose freight or shipping container is of rectangular shape, weatherproof for transporting and storing a number of unit loads, packages or bulk material. It confines and protects the contents from loss or damage. It can be separated from the means of transport, handled as a unit load and transshipped without rehandling the contents. The mode of classification of containers is by size or dimensions. Containers are defined in multiples of 10ft i.e. 10ft, 20ft, 30ft, 40ft.

Presently 20ft and 40ft containers are used and around 65-70% of the world fleet consist of 20ft containers. Most of the containers have a width of 8ft. But in height, containers vary from 8ft to 8&1/2ft. Presently about 75% of world box fleet have a height of 8 1/2ft and about 20% have a height of 8ft. However, there is an increasing tendency to use containers of 9ft and 9&1/2ft (called high-cube containers). The inside volume of a standard 20ft by 8ft by 8&1/2ft container is around 33 cubic meters.

I would also like to add that containers are also classified by use. They can also be classified by the kind of cargo to be stowed therein.

(a) General Purpose Cargo Containers are the most representative type for general cargo and do not require temperature control. These are also called Dry Cargo Containers.

(b) Thermal Containers are designed for cargo requiring refrigerated or insulated storage. They are covered with material of low heat transfer such as polystyrene foam.
Thermal containers are further classified into three types:
Refrigerated (or Reefer) Containers, Insulated Containers and Ventilated Containers.

(C) Special Containers: The third category of container comprises the balance types under the broad head of "Special Containers." Prominent under this head are Bulk Containers, Tank Containers, Open Top Containers, Side Open Containers, Flats, Car Containers, Pen Containers (to carry livestock) etc.
