Q. What type of material is Tencel?
Answer
Like viscose and modal Tencel is a form of rayon. To produce these cellulose fibers wood pulp is dissolved in a solvent and then dried using a technique called spinning. Wood chips are made into a wet mixture by combining them with a solvent before drying. The resulting threads are chemically treated before being squeezed through even smaller holes spun into yarn and finally woven into fabric. It seems like a straightforward procedure but what impact does it have on the environment? Less energy and water are needed to produce Tencel than regular cotton. It may be purchased undyed or with minimal processing because it is created in a natural white state.
