Though both the materials are commonly mistaken PVC is a durable vinyl polymer. On the other hand HDPE is a polyethylene thermoplastic which is made from petroleum derivatives. As for their functioning capacity both pipes are strong and can withstand high temperatures. Having said that HDPE pipes and their fittings have proven to be more durable in farming conditions when exposed to rain stress wind heat or cold.
