There are two primary categories of sluice valves: parallel and wedge-shaped. The knife gate valve, which has a sharp edge just on bottom of the gate, is a common type of parallel gate valve that uses a flat gate across two parallel seats. The wedge-shaped control valves have two inclined seating and an inclined gate that is slightly out of alignment.
