Q. Is acrylic polymer toxic?
Answer
Many common consumer commercial and industrial items are made from acrylic polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) based polymers which are relatively low- toxic but may include trace amounts of leftover monomers and process toxins. It could be harmful to or irritate the eyes. Allergic skin reactions can occur after repeated or prolonged contact with the allergen. Ingestion Inhalation at a higher concentration may cause irritation. Inhalation inhaling a concentration of dust that is higher than the safe limit may cause short-term discomfort. Based on the Exposure-based Quantitative Risk Assessment strategy the potential for inducing contact allergy in consumers was calculated.
