If a user is concerned about the home's safety he/she should install motion sensor lights at the gates to the property near the patio door in the shadowy parts of the yard and in and around any trees or shrubs. While it's true that lighting alone can't ensure safety it's one of the best (and cheapest) ways to deter would-be burglars.
