Q. How are puff snacks made?
Answer
Puff snacks are made inside an apparatus known as an extruder. To manufacture puff snacks the dough is first heated until it is suitably malleable and then this dough is squeezed out or “extruded” under high pressure through a die using an auger. This forms the requisite shape of the collette. It is of utmost importance to maintain optimum temperature and moisture levels so that proper air cells are formed in the collette. Once the puffed snack is favourably formed inside the die it is dried inside an oven until it is crisp. Finally when the snacks cool down to room temperature they are packed in vacuum-sealed packaging. Puff snacks are characteristically very dry I.E. they contain less than 5% moisture. Puff snacks come in various shapes and sizes — popular shapes are:Ball-shaped such as generic cheese ballsCurly shaped such as cheetos and kurkureStraight and Irregular.
