MCBs come in two varieties: single pole, used to interrupt a single phase, and double pole, used to do the same for both phases and the neutral. In other words, a single-pole switch manages a single live wire and trips the line if the fault current exceeds the pickup setting, while a double-pole switch can manage two live wires or one live and one neutral wire.
