It is the instrument used to measure the vital capacity (VC). a) This is a double walled metallic cylindrical chamber containing water between the two cylinders. The cavity of the inner cylinder at its lower end is connected with the help of one way breathing valve to corrugated rubber tubing to which a mouth puce us attached, b) An inverted cylinder called of Bell of light weight material (aluminum) floats on the water and surrounds the inner cylinder completely. The tip of the bell carries a hook to which is attached a chain /nylon rope which passes over a frictionless pulley. The other end of the chain carries a weight which counter balances the bell. An the volume of air in the bell increases, it moves up and its displacement movement can be recorded with the help of a pointer pivoted to the other head pulley rotates, the pointer sweeps over the circular scale on the pulley through an arc proportional to the rise of the bell. The graduation on the pulley directly gives the volume of air collected under the bell.
