Product Overview

Key Features

Sodium sulfate is the sodium salt 99 % of sulfuric acid. When anhydrous, it is a white crystalline solid of formula Na2SO4 known as the mineral thenardite; the decahydrate Na2SO410H2O is found naturally as the mineral mirabilite, and in processed form has been known as Glauber's salt or, historically, sal mirabilis since the 17th century. Another solid is the heptahydrate, which transforms to mirabilite when cooled. With an annual production of 6 million tonnes, it is a major commodity chemical product.

Sodium sulfate is mainly used for the manufacture of detergent and in the kraft process of paper pulping. About two-thirds of the world's production is from mirabilite, the natural mineral form of the decahydrate, and the remainder from by-products of chemical processes such as hydrochloric acid production.

Properties

Sodium sulfate (\(Na_{2}SO_{4}\)) is a white, crystalline inorganic compound, the sodium salt of sulfuric acid, highly soluble in water, used widely as a filler in detergents, in paper pulping, and as a laxative. It exists in anhydrous form (thenardite) or as hydrates like Glauber's salt (\(Na_{2}SO_{4}\cdot 10H_{2}O\)), is chemically stable, and can be sourced naturally or as a byproduct of chemical processes. Key Properties & Forms: Formula: \(Na_{2}SO_{4}\) Appearance: White crystalline solid Solubility: Highly soluble in water, insoluble in alcohol Hydrates: Decahydrate (\(Na_{2}SO_{4}\cdot 10H_{2}O\)) is known as Glauber's salt, found naturally as mirabilite. Neutral Salt: Forms neutral solutions (pH 7) in water. Common Uses: Detergents: Acts as a filler, preventing caking and improving texture in powdered detergents. Paper Industry: Used in the Kraft process for making pulp. Glass Manufacturing: Helps remove air bubbles, increasing clarity. Textiles: Aids in uniform dye penetration for consistent color. Pharmaceuticals: Functions as an osmotic laxative to cleanse bowels before medical procedures. Chemical Production: A byproduct in processes like hydrochloric acid manufacturing. Sources: Natural: Extracted from minerals like mirabilite (natural decahydrate) and thenardite. Industrial Byproduct: A byproduct from processes such as manufacturing hydrogen sulfide and lithium-ion battery recycling. Related linksDive deeper in AI ModeAI responses may include mistakes.
