A ring torsion load cell is a specialized type of load cell, often characterized by its low-profile, disc-like or ring shape, designed primarily for compression weighing applications. The "ring torsion" name comes from how the internal sensing element deforms under load. Instead of bending or shearing as in other load cell types, the force applied causes a torsional (twisting) deformation within the ring-shaped elastic body where strain gauges are located.

How They Work

Like other strain gauge load cells, ring torsion load cells utilize strain gauges bonded to their precisely machined metallic body (often high-strength stainless steel). When a vertical load is applied, the internal structure of the load cell undergoes minute twisting. This torsional strain is detected by the strain gauges, which are arranged in a Wheatstone bridge configuration.
