Specifically, it interferes with the electron transport chain in the mitochondria of the fluke cells, which is essential for the parasite s energy metabolism. This leads to a build-up of toxic metabolic products within the parasite, causing its death. Nitroxynil also has a damaging effect on the parasite's outer surface (tegument), which contributes to its elimination from the host. Toxicity to Parasites: It is selectively toxic to flukes, having minimal toxicity to the host (the livestock), which makes it a useful treatment option. Side Effects and Considerations: While Nitroxynil is generally safe when used as directed, misuse or overuse can lead to toxicity, including symptoms such as lethargy, loss of appetite, or digestive issues in the animal. Some animals may experience local reactions at the injection site or irritation with topical treatments.
