Itraconazole is a triazole antifungal agent that has a broad spectrum of activity and is well tolerated. Itraconazole is highly efficacious, particularly because its main metabolite, hydroxy-itraconazole, also has considerable antifungal activity. For the treatment of superficial fungal infections itraconazole is a suitable drug as it accumulates at the infection site. Capsules are indicated for the treatment of the following fungal infections in immunocompromised and non-immunocompromised patients: Aspergillosis, pulmonary and extrapulmonary, in patients who are intolerant of or who are refractory to amphotericin B therapy.
