Itraconazole is highly efficacious particularly because its main metabolite hydroxy-itraconazole also has considerable antifungal activity. For the treatment of superficial fungal infections itraconazole is a suitable drug as it accumulates at the infection site. Capsules are indicated for the treatment of the following fungal infections in immunocompromised and non-immunocompromised patients: Aspergillosis pulmonary and extrapulmonary in patients who are intolerant of or who are refractory to amphotericin B therapy.
