The way a digital thermometer works depends upon its sensor types that include: resistance temperature detector (RTD), thermocouple and thermistor. Resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) exhibit changes in resistance with changes in temperature. The hotter the RTDs become, the higher the value of their electrical resistance. Thermocouples are accurate as well as highly sensitive to small temperature changes. They respond fast to changes to the environment. They contain dissimilar metal wires joined at one end and the metal pair generates a net thermoelectric voltage between their opening and the size of the temperature difference. Thermistor is the most sensitive temperature sensors. It is a semiconductor device with an electrical resistance that is proportional to temperature. There are two types of thermistor: negative temperature coefficient (NTC) devices are used in temperature sensing and are the most common type of thermistor; and positive temperature coefficient (PTC) devices that are used in electric current control.

Digital thermometers are temperature-sensing instruments that record and display actual temperature of men and materials. It can be easily portable and it does contain permanent probes and a convenient digital display. In different industrial and commercial settings, digital thermometers are used to test and maintain temperature. The most commonly used thermometer in our homes is the digital thermometer that can be used to record temperatures from the mouth, armpit or rectum. Among the three options, armpit temperatures are the least accurate while rectal temperatures provide the most accurate readings for children between 3 months and 3 years of age.

Display options in digital thermometers include: fahrenheit display, display range, and scale divisions; Celsius or centigrade display, display range, and scale divisions; both Fahrenheit and Celsius displays. Display range is the minimum and maximum values of temperature that can be displayed.
